Use Daily Journal Prompts to Help Young Writers (Freebie Included!)
You can help young writers or struggling writers become better writers by using daily journal prompts. Daily writing will help build their confidence! Students will use sight words, sounding out words, and using correct writing conventions in an authentic way.
Why use daily journal prompts?
Beginning and struggling readers benefit the most from daily writing. What I like to do is to allow students to pick one journal entry during morning work. That’s it! I don’t grade their writing, I just offer positive feedback by complimenting something they did right. If a student makes a mistake, I let them know briefly. We’re not conferencing.
These journal prompts are inclusive (it’s not overtly centered around religious holidays). There’s enough space for students to draw and write multiple sentences.
Each journal prompt includes:
- Text and visual editing checklist
- Illustrated word bank
- A space to draw a detailed picture
- A space to write several sentences
