My Favorite Book Writing Activity
Here is a fun and easy writing activity for kindergarten and first-grade students to write about their favorite book.
Step 1: Choose a favorite book
Ask students to think about their favorite book. If they can’t think of one, encourage them to visit the school library or books you read aloud.
Step 2: Talk about the book to a peer
Encourage the students to talk about the book to a peer. Talking will help them remember the details and the plot and give them ideas for what to write.
Step 3: Use a Graphic Organizer
Ask the students to create a list of adjectives to describe why they love the book. They can do this by drawing pictures or writing short sentences about the characters, the setting, the problem, and the story’s solution.
Step 4: Write a summary
Older students may be able to write a summary of the book. The summary should include the title, author, and a brief description of why they like the book.
Younger students can write about their favorite part or a simple sentence saying they like the book.
Step 5: Write a personal response
After writing the summary, ask the students to write about why they like the book. This could be because of the characters and events that make the story likable.
Step 6: Draw a picture
Finally, ask the students to draw a picture of their favorite part of the book or their favorite character. Drawing will allow them to use their creativity and add visual interest to their writing.
Step 7: Share
Provide them for students to share their favorite books with the class. I like to have them share during morning meetings and allow their classmates to ask questions about the book.
