How To Help Students Write Sentences

I’m introducing my latest resource: Word Mapping – Writing Sentences. This no-prep resource enhances language skills through a multisensory approach, empowering students to recognize words and construct meaningful sentences.

What is Word Mapping – Writing Sentences?

Word Mapping: Writing Sentences is a versatile resource that combines word mapping and sentence construction. Students say, tap, and write the sounds they hear to form words. Then, they will utilize these words to craft sentences, promoting a deeper understanding of language structures.

When can I use this?

Create a dedicated Word Mapping Center in your classroom where students can work independently or in small groups. Equip the center with the necessary materials – printable word mapping sheets, writing utensils, and sound charts. I like to print, staple them, and turn them into books.

Meaningful Morning Work

Start your day with a quick word-mapping exercise during your morning routine. You can select a page relevant to your current lesson or focus area and have students complete it.

Literacy Stations

Students can practice the target sound during literacy stations. You can differentiate your instruction by assigning certain pages to students based on need. With daily practice, students will write sentences using the phonics skills you taught.

Whole Group Practice

Project the word mapping sheet on your interactive whiteboard for a whole-class activity. Lead students through saying, tapping, and writing the sounds together before encouraging them to formulate sentences independently.

Independent Practice

Extend learning beyond the classroom by assigning word mapping and sentence construction as independent practice at home. Many parents are new to word mapping and the science of reading-aligned instruction and are looking for resources to help their students at home. You can send a few pages home for parents who want additional support.
