HOW TO Create Your Own Moon Pop-Up Book

I’m sharing an engaging science and reading project to ignite your students’ creativity. We’re going to make a pop-up book all about the Moon!

This activity will allow your students to write a fact while crafting a visually stunning pop-up book to share with others.

Materials You’ll Need:

  • White cardstock
  • Black paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • White crayon
  • Gray construction paper

Step 1: Getting Started

Begin by distributing white cardstock to each student. This will serve as the base of their pop-up book. Have them fold the white paper in half.

Step 2: Creating the Night Sky

Have students cut a piece of black paper to match the size of their cardstock. They should now draw stars, constellations, and other night sky onto the black paper using a white crayon.

Step 3: Adding the Moon Fact

Next, give each student a fact sheet about the Moon. They’ll write one interesting fact about our celestial neighbor on this sheet. Encourage them to make their fact engaging and informative, as it will be the centerpiece of their pop-up book. If they need help, read books about the Moon and record new information on the board for them to reference.

Step 4: Cutting and Crafting the Pop-Up

To create the pop-up effect, students should make two parallel slits in the crevice of their cardstock. These slits should be at the top of the page and about an inch apart. These slits will be where they attach their pop-up Moon.

Step 5: Crafting the Moon

Provide students with gray construction paper for creating the Moon. Don’t forget the craters!

Step 6: Assembling the Pop-Up Book

With the Moon ready, it’s time for students to bring their pop-up books together. They should glue the Moon on black paper (see picture). The Moon will pop up when they open the boop, creating a stunning 3D effect.

Step 7: The Final Touch

Have your students glue their fact sheet about the Moon at the bottom of the cardstock.

Step 8: The Author’s Chair

Encourage your students to share their pop-up books with their peers. This promotes collaboration and allows them to learn new ideas about the Moon. Students can take turns reading their facts and admiring each other’s artistic interpretations of the Moon and the night sky.

This Moon pop-up book project is a fun and creative endeavor and an excellent way to promote literacy and engage students in the wonders of space. By combining science and art, you’ll inspire a sense of awe and curiosity about the universe we live in.
