Fun Activities for Teaching Shape Attributes

2D Shapes: Use Playdough

We want students to distinguish between different shapes. What makes a circle a circle? Or a triangle a triangle? A fun introductory activity is using play dough. Have students use play dough to make shapes and let them talk. Facilitate the conversation about how many straight lines they see or how they made them.

Shape Hunt

Shapes are all around us! Go on a shape hunt in the classroom or the school to look for examples of 2D and 3D shapes. Have students write and draw to tell what they saw.

Compose Shapes

We rarely see one shape in an object. Usually, it is a composite of many. Play games such as Fill in the Hexagons or have them use shapes to build things or places.
