The Best Telling Time Activities for First Grade

I will share my favorite telling time activities for first grade. We use time all the time! We know when to go to lunch, recess, and specials because of the time. Knowing the time is more than knowing our schedule for the day. We use it in almost every aspect of our lives. So, we introduce time concepts in first grade.

Time activities are a lot of fun! Since it’s first grade, we tend to relate time to their lives, so they can understand how it impacts their lives. We describe our schedule at home or school, or we sort activities we do in the morning versus the afternoon.

It’s best to review time concepts using hands-on learning. This means we sort and draw pictures to show our schedule or use clocks to show different times on an analog or digital clock.

Math Mats

Math mats are my favorite small group and math center activities. Math mats are interactive worksheets based on a specific skill. They are usually low to no prep involved and engage students way more than worksheets!

One Hour Before and After Math Center activity

For this math mat activity, students pick a card and show the time one hour before and after. They also write the time at the bottom.
