Print Concepts Sort Worksheets

Hi there! I wanted to share an updated print concept sort worksheet!

What’s Print Concepts?

Understanding how print works is important! Students need to know the difference between the front and the back of a book, where we start to read, which direction we read and the difference between letters and pictures.

What Makes Print Concepts Challenging?

Another aspect of print concepts that can be challenging to emerging readers is the difference between a letter, a word and a sentence. Some students struggle with 1:1 pointing cannot distinguish a word from a sentence or a letter in a word. Students develop this skill through hands-on practice, exposure and explicit, direct instruction.

Sort it Out!

I love sorting activities! It’s a great way for students to analyze their choices and put them in the correct category. Students sort the cards by letters, words and sentences. You can use this for literacy centers, independent practice, small group instruction or homework.

If you are going to use this for your instruction, you can discuss the differences between letters and words (letters make words) and words and sentences (we use words to share an idea or words make sentences). I like this sort because students can see the differences.
